Huayi Jinan Precious Metals Consulting. Should Europe copy the US's "shale revolution"? There are good reasons to think the answer should be yes. Lowering energy prices is one of Europe's over-reliance on Russian energy - about a third of its natural gas comes from Russia, is another. From Britain to Poland, energy companies have tried and failed to replicate the success of fracking in the United States.
The reason why Europe rejects the "shale revolution" is that it is worried that the extraction of shale oil and gas will damage the environment, pollute water sources and block rural roads. European policymakers are also concerned that fracking will slow the transition to low-carbon energy. But shale contains cheaper natural gas that could boost the economy and reduce Russia's grip on European energy. So, which side’s considerations will ultimately prevail? Or can they coexist harmoniously?
According to estimates, Europe has recoverable shale gas reserves that are even greater than those in the United States, but these energy sources can only sit quietly in shale. Germany, France, the Netherlands, Scotland and Belgium have all banned fracking. Currently, only the UK is using fracking on a large scale. The UK government is pushing for technology to make up for falling North Sea oil production.
At the beginning of the month, Quadrila Resources received permission to carry out hydraulic fracturing on four wells in the UK after winning a two-and-a-half-year battle with local authorities. In 2001, Quadrilla Resources sparked controversy over an exploration well in northwest England and led to a year-long ban on fracking in the UK.
Thousands of protesters camped out in a small south London village in 2016 until Quadrila Resources abandoned a drilling rig there. In 2006, in a town called R in eastern Poland, locals successfully blocked a hydraulic fracturing site. In addition, activists from the environmental group Greenpeace occupied a shale gas well in Denmark.
Public opposition, regulatory delays, tax considerations and disappointing production from some test wells have scared away investors. Chevron, ExxonMobil and Total abandoned mining plans in Poland after unsatisfactory exploration results. Total's shale gas exploration plans in Denmark were also interrupted due to insufficient production.
